Canada’s Conservatives commit to Essex-Windsor flood mitigation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Essex, ON - Today, Chris Lewis, Conservative Candidate for Essex, is happy to announce that a Conservative government will honour federal funding commitments for flood mitigation and shoreline protection investments in the Essex-Windsor area.

“Flooding is a major concern for families in the Essex-Windsor area - approximately 21,000 properties are at risk every year from flooding and that number is expected to rise,” said Chris Lewis. “A Conservative government will be a full funding partner with the region to help put in place the necessary flood mitigation infrastructure we need to keep people safe.”

Through Canada’s Recovery Plan, a Conservative government will not only fund flood mitigation and shoreline protection priorities for communities in Essex-Windsor, but it will adopt a mitigation and adaptation lens to all of the government’s infrastructure investments. Canada’s Conservatives will work with communities to identify risks and design infrastructure to be resilient to extreme weather events and protect against hazards. This will help communities be prepared in the event of an emergency.

To help communities build resiliency, a Conservative government will also:

  • Appoint a national disaster resilience advisor to the Privy Council Office.
  • Implement a national action plan on floods, including establishing a residential high risk flood insurance program to ensure all Canadians are financially protected while avoiding future government bailouts.
  • Devise and implement a national climate adaptation strategy.

“I’m pleased a Conservative government recognizes the urgent need to build more resilient communities in Essex and help them get back on their feet,” said Lewis. “Together, we will secure the future for families in Essex-Windsor and across the country.”
